It indicates that 99-percent of any particle larger than the stated size will be trapped within the filter. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Absorption</strong> - Is when a solid takes up molecules into its molecular structure. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Acid aerosol</strong> - Small solid particles or liquids that are acidic and small enough to become airborne. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Acid neutralizing capacity</strong> - A measure of the buffering capacity of water, the ability of water to resist changes in the pH level. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Acid rain</strong> - Is rain that has a low pH due to contact with atmospheric pollutants such as sulphuric oxides. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Acidic water</strong> - Is water with a pH of less then 7.&nbsp; </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Acidity</strong> - The quantitative capacity of water to neutralize a base, expressed in ppm or mg|L calcium carbonate equivalent. The number of hydrogen atoms that are present determines this. It is usually measured by titration with a standard solution of sodium hydroxide. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Activated coal</strong> - This is the most commonly used adsorption medium, produced by heating carbonaceous substances or cellulose bases in the absence of oxygen. It has a highly porous surface and is commonly used to some remove organic matter, chlorine and dissolved gases from water. It`s appearance is similar to that of coal or peat and is available in granular, powder or block form. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Activated sludge</strong> - Is an oxygen dependent biological process which converts soluble organic matter into solid biomass and is removable by gravity or filtration. </font ><br><font class=bluetext><strong>Active groups</strong> - Are fixed ions bolted onto the matrix of an ion exchanger.
